wind up cd player or mp3?

I have a wind up radio for when neighborhood power goes out. If power goes out for the city for extended period of time, is there a windup cd player or mp3 player?

... and if you can't get ahold of such a player or a POTUS you might look into a crank or solar powered battery charger.

picked up a small 13W flash drive/SD card CD player stereo for $59 (small inverter for $49 too) run it from 20 W solar panel/battery...real neat, I have 4 GB of MP3 in the smallest volume...oh yeah it has a remote...:applause_

I was very chuffed by this cheap combo.

1. In an extended power outage situation, everyone's power is going to be out. Speakers can be loud enough to attract looters, and earbuds are Condition White--and you need to be ALERT.

2. You know all those books and manuals you bought for just this kind of scenario, but just haven't had time to read?

Sharpen your mind. Don't dull your senses.

Geeze... I'm sorry to hear that but thanks for the warning! Did it ever heal?

:tongue_ma:

Sorry... I used to stay in NZ, Oz even for a while but I can't say I ever heard that term before and aside from sounding like something you'd have to put a salve on I couldn't even guess what "chuffed" means. Sometimes English isn't English, eh? :D

Actually it is.

chuffed adj. Someone who describes themselves as being chuffed is generally happy with life. You can also get away with saying you are unchuffed or dischuffed if something gets your back up. Make sure you only use this word in the correct tense and familiarise yourself with the meaning of the word chuff too.

All kinds of gear if you're watchful.

Many wind-up radios charge-plug let the power flow out.

There are plug-units for any common alkaline--or you could make your own with a batt-socket and some wire from the electronic store.

Here's a fancy one:

http://www.greenbatteries.com/battpack.html

It fits solar panels and used to be part of the Brunton series (iSun).

If you have USB charging, you could consolidate by charging your laptop instead, or there are usb-power conversion for your 12v car, etc.
Anything like this would work:
http://www.amazon.com/Century-Profes.../dp/B0000AXDQP and there are 110 inverter units as well.

Depends on what you want to do.

I'd recommend a quality MP3 player along with a quality solar battery charger.

I found this one at circuitcity

A single AAA battery lasts for up to 19 hours of continuous playback so youll be jamming through even the longest sessions. and I found a solar charger on a website, but have it bookmarked elsewhere.

To hell with an iPod. iPods control YOU, not vice-versa. My daughter got an iPod Nano for Christmas 2005, and that damn thing was so particular due to Digital Restrictions Management crap that I ended up buying her a Creative Zen Vision M to replace it. We had one hell of a time dealing with iTunes, as it's rigged to force you to use iTunes format, since MP3 doesn't make Apple any money.

Get an MP3 player of any decent brand, SanDisk, Creative, Philips that has full compatibility with standard MP3 format...

That's an excellent choice! I've never had a failure with a SanDisk product, despite abuse of them. I have an older Sansa, and it bounces around in my car all the time, and keeps right on going. My wife has this particular model (I bought it for her for her recovery from brain surgery last year), and she's very happy with it.
